HEALTH POLICIES

Sign-in/Sign-out at HS - Your student needs to go to the Guidance Office to sign in/sign out. Students must sign out before leaving the building, even if they plan to return later in the day. Please send a note to the school with your student indicating the need to leave. Students can not just sign themselves out and must have parental permission to leave the building.

Fever - If a student has a fever, please keep them home. Students with temperatures of 100.5 or higher will be sent home. Students with temperatures below 100.5 will be assessed, and a referral will be made to School Medical Services (SMS) as needed. It is recommended that your student stay home until they have been fever free for 24 hours.

Vomiting - Any student who has an episode of vomiting will be sent home from school. Please do not send your student to school if they have vomited in the last 24 hours.

MEDICATION POLICY (This is NYS law)

1. An adult must deliver all medications to the health office. Medications delivered by a student will be held, and a parent will be contacted to visit the health office to confirm the medication and sign an authorization form.

2. A doctor's order is required for all medications, including over-the-counter drugs such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, Anbesol, cough drops, and medicated skin creams. Please be sure to ask your healthcare provider for a copy of the written order for the school nurse. A pharmacy label is NOT a doctor's order.

3. Medication MUST be delivered in its original pharmacy-labeled container. Another such container should be provided for use outside of school (such as on field trips); the pharmacy will offer an extra bottle at your request.

Health exams/appraisals: A health certificate, including body mass index and weight status category, is required for all students new to the district in UPK, Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th, and 11th. The health certificate must be dated no more than 12 months before the start of the school year in which it is required -or- the date of entrance to the school for new entrants. Health certificates must be submitted within 30 days of admission into school or grades mentioned above to continue attendance.

MARATHON SCHOOL HEALTH CLINIC

Marathon Central School offers a unique program called the Marathon School Health Clinic, sponsored by the Family Health Network. The clinic is an all-inclusive doctor's office conveniently located in your child's school and is available with no out-of-pocket costs. Services offered by the clinic include treatment of acute illness, chronic disease monitoring, physicals, immunizations, allergy injections, and other general healthcare needs.

If you wish to have your child seen for an acute illness, remember you may notify the Marathon School Health Clinic by note or phone call. If your child is home ill, you may also call for an appointment and bring your child in to be seen.

In addition to our medical services, our School Health Clinic also provides annual preventative dental services to K, 2nd, 3rd, and 6th graders. The dental services include oral health education and promotion, dental screenings and referrals, sealants, cleanings, fluoride varnish applications, case management, and assisting in establishing a dental home as needed.
